Set within the rural landscape of Pāuatahanui, Deviation House reimagines an existing two-storey Lockwood dwelling; transforming a once tired structure into a bold and contemporary whare that enhances both amenity and spatial experience for a growing whānau.
DEVIATION HOUSE.
The project is grounded in the idea of deviation: a deliberate move away from the constraints of the original Lockwood dwelling. Through strategic additions and reconfiguration, the design opens the home to light, outlook, and connection. A new open-plan kitchen and living space forms the heart of the dwelling, complemented by the addition of a generous rumpus and double garage workshop at ground level, supporting both family life and practical rural use.
Architecturally, the intervention expresses a clear contrast between old and new. A grounded, curved brick base anchors the building to the land, while above, clean, dark, and sharply defined forms are articulated through Abodo timber cladding and expansive glazing. The composition introduces a sense of movement and sculptural quality; an intentional deviation in form that breathes new life into the original structure.
The material palette is both robust and refined, responding to the rural setting while elevating the architectural language. Timber introduces warmth and tactility, while brick provides permanence and grounding. Together, they create a layered expression that sits confidently within the natural landscape.
Internally, the design prioritises openness, flexibility, and flow. Spaces are reconfigured to maximise usability and connection, shifting away from the compartmentalised nature of the original Lockwood layout. The result is a home that feels expansive, light-filled, and inherently liveable.
Deviation House is a study in transformation: demonstrating how thoughtful alterations and additions can extend the life of an existing building while redefining its identity. Through clarity of form, material expression, and spatial planning, the project elevates a modest rural dwelling into a contemporary architectural response that is both grounded and expressive.
