A project reflecting a shared commitment to creating warm, healthy and inspiring learning environments that nurture tamariki while supporting the aspirations of whānau and kaiako.

TE KAKANO O TE KURA.

Te Kākano o Te Kura is a carefully considered redevelopment of an existing kōhanga reo in Ōtaki, delivered in partnership with the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust.

Rather than simply upgrading an existing building, the project focused on improving the everyday experience of those who use it. Through thoughtful alterations and targeted interventions, teaching spaces were reimagined to provide greater functionality, enhanced comfort and stronger connections between learning, play and the surrounding environment. Every design decision was guided by the understanding that the physical environment plays a vital role in supporting early childhood development, wellbeing and cultural identity.

Working within a defined budget and an operational kōhanga required careful planning and close collaboration throughout the project. Construction staging, programme coordination and cost management were continuously balanced to minimise disruption while ensuring the kōhanga could continue serving its community. Strong partnerships between the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust, contractors, consultants and the wider project team allowed challenges to be resolved proactively, creating an efficient and highly collaborative delivery process.

Improving the thermal performance and overall quality of the learning environment was a central focus of the design. Enhancements to the building envelope, carefully selected materials and practical detailing contribute to healthier, warmer and more comfortable teaching spaces that support year-round learning while reducing ongoing operational costs. These improvements ensure the kōhanga will continue to serve future generations in an environment that promotes wellbeing, resilience and sustainability.

As a practice, this project holds particular significance for us. We believe that investing in educational environments is an investment in the future of our communities, and Te Kākano o Te Kura embodies that philosophy. It is a project that demonstrates what can be achieved through genuine partnership, shared purpose and collective effort; where many hands came together to create meaningful and lasting outcomes for tamariki, whānau and the wider community.

Te Kākano o Te Kura is more than a building project; it is an expression of care, collaboration and the enduring value of designing places that enable children to learn, grow and flourish.
