A hideaway set within the serene rural locality of Maungakotukutuku, The Hide Kapiti’s clean lines, sharp edges and considered materials help to elevate sweeping Kapiti coast views.

THE HIDE KAPITI.

Perched high above the Maungakotukutuku Valley, this secluded luxury retreat is designed to immerse guests in the dramatic landscape of the Kāpiti Coast.

Created in close collaboration with the visionary clients behind The Hide Kapiti, the project offers an unforgettable off-grid experience where architecture quietly frames the beauty of its surroundings.

The remote and highly exposed hilltop site presented significant design and construction challenges. Located within extreme wind zones, every aspect of the building required robust detailing and resilient material selections to withstand the demanding coastal environment. Construction itself became part of the story, with much of the building carefully transported and assembled on site with minimal heavy machinery.

A restrained palette of natural materials allows the building to settle comfortably into its native bush setting. Abodo timber cladding will weather gracefully over time, while hand-applied Venetian plaster introduces warmth, texture and refinement to the interior.

Large areas of glazing and a dramatic cantilever project towards the landscape, framing uninterrupted views across to Kapiti Island and creating the sensation of floating above the valley below.

Designed for year-round comfort, the retreat combines high-performance thermal design with carefully considered passive principles, delivering a warm, efficient and comfortable environment despite its exposed location. Outside, an open-air bath and outdoor fireplace extend the living experience beyond the building, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy spectacular sunsets beneath expansive West Coast skies.

The Hide Kapiti is an example of architecture that is both adventurous and understated; demonstrating how thoughtful design, technical rigour and a deep respect for place can create an extraordinary escape in one of Aotearoa's most remarkable landscapes.
